Summary

At 4:00 PM MDT meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms extending from 10 km southeast of Wetaskiwin to 30 km northwest of Hanna. These thunderstorms are moving to the northeast at 45 km/h and have the potential to produce large hail, strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall and intense lightning. This is a warning that severe thunderstorms are imminent or occurring in these regions. Remember that some severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes. Listen for updated warnings. Details

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and early this evening. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the foothills to the west and northwest of Calgary early this afternoon and move to the northeast throughout the afternoon. The main threats with these storms will be heavy rainfall, strong winds and large hail. A strong westerly flow will develop this afternoon and evening in Southern Alberta associated with an intense weather system moving through Central Alberta. Westerly winds of 80 gusting to 100 km/h are expected in the Lethbridge, Cardston, Crowsnest and Claresholm regions and winds of 70 gusting to 90 km/h are expected in the Brooks region. Winds are forecast to diminish overnight. Behind the low pressure system strong westerly winds will develop over Central Alberta this evening. The Drayton Valley, Leduc, Red Deer and Lloydminster regions can expect winds up to 60 gusting 90 km/h. The strong winds will continue into Wednesday mornin
