A broad ridge of high pressure should cover New Zealand through to Wednesday with settled weather and little or no precipitation. A weakening front should move onto the South Island on Thursday bringing a modest amount of rain to Fiordland and Westland.

On Friday a deep low of tropical origin is expected to lie north or northeast of the North Island with a very strong and moist easterly flow spreading onto northern North Island areas. A moderate risk of severe easterly gales and heavy rain is shown for Northland, and a lower risk for Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula by the end of Friday. The future path of this tropical low next weekend is still very uncertain but it has the potential to bring severe weather to many parts of New Zealand during the weekend.
